FC were back on the hunt for more vital Southern league points in this home game v Potters Bar Town. The team already decimated by injury did just enough to grab all three points although the team suffered yet more injury setbacks including the loss of talismanic defender Ben Stevens. On a more positive note, striker Sean Sonner and defender Simon Sweeney returned to the fold to give boss Steve Bateman much needed options. Sonner's running and a commanding defensive display by Sweeney topped with a single goal of some quality by Gareth Price sealed the win for the Moles.
It was the away team which started the match the brighter of the two sides. Almost from the kick off, a cross from the right was met by Josh Hutchinson, whose attempt flew over the bar. An even better chance occurred two minutes later. Evandro Delgado danced through several tackles before unleashing a shot which James Weatherill did well to push away for a corner.
FC’s first chance was on the 16 minute mark. Jamie Rudd fed Sean Sonner, in for the injured Brian Haule, but Sean’s shot whistled over the keeper’s bar. It was on 30 minutes that FC grabbed the only goal of the game. Lamar Simpson guided a ball from the right into the path of Gareth Price and the FC man made no mistake sending a rocket shot past away keeper Mike Underwood. This was Gareth’s fourth goal in his last three games, a rich vein of form which as seen him score 17 goals, a terrific record for a team which has been at the wrong end of the table for most of the season. On 40 minutes Sean Sonner could have made the game safer but, after a decent run, his shot lacked the power to trouble Underwood.
After the break it was the away team which again made the brighter start. Alex Shepherd tested Weatherill early on. A few seconds after this, an attempted Weatherill clearance ricocheted off the advancing Delgado however the ball spun away to safety. Yet another attack in a sustained spell of pressure saw a Chris Doyle shot deflected over the bar. From the resultant corner, Potters Bar appealed for a penalty but the claim for handball against Kevin Mealor was waved away by the referee.
A weary looking FC side finally looked to gain a more secure control of the game as the half progressed with Sam Batemen and Bradley Wadkins looking to play through the nippy attack line of Simpson, Sonner and Price. On more than one occasion the offside trap looked to have been sprung only for the referee to indicate otherwise. Simpson had a chance when running with a defender, a deflection sent the ball spinning goalwards however it lacked neither the power nor the pace to trouble the away keeper.
There was always the reminder that FC’s lead was brittle at best. Hutchinson had a shot on 56 minutes which slammed against the post with the keeper well beaten. Ten minutes later and the FC woodwork was rattled once again with Alex Shepherd rising up above the FC centre backs to head goalwards.
With FC happy to sit back and try to hit Potters Bar on the break, there was always pressure on the home goal. As the minutes ticked away Cole Penny hit a venomous shot from the right which Weatherill did well to batter down. A last minute half chance for Sean Sonner came to nothing nevertheless the home team had done what had to be done and finished the week with a third successive victory as they attempt to finish as high as possible in the final league table.
