Report by Jools Thomas
Chertsey arrived at Haywood Way desperate for points in their relegation scrap whereas the Moles, already safe, were looking to add to their recent points tally and finish as high up the table as possible. As it was, it was the visitors who emerged triumphant grabbing all three points in what was a disappointing display from FC. Too often the final ball was hit and hope without thought and concentration, aspects which have been very uncharacteristic of performances under Steve Bateman.
The first chance fell to FC and it was Sam Bateman who produced a long range effort which cleared the bar after taking a deflection. At the other end Steve Brown’s free kick into the box hit an FC defender and whilst Brown's team mates appealed for handball the referee showed little interest and waved played on. Brown opened the scoring very soon afterwards however. His right handed corner carried right over home keeper James Weatherill and despite fingertips, the ball carried over into the net. It was a goal that had looked on the cards as the away team had been making most of the running during the opening exchanges of the match.
Steve Brown was again the danger man not too long after the goal. His snap shot on the edge of the box carried the necessary power but not the accuracy and the ball therefore sailed harmlessly over the crossbar. Team mate Rich Hodgeson was the next to try to increase the lead with a low shot powerfully struck which ended up zipping past the post. FC enjoyed their first strike on goal towards the end of the first half. Sean Sonner was put through one on one against ex-Mole Rhys Marshall in the Chertsey goal but his well struck shot was saved. Jacob Lowe, stepping up to the first team, forced Marshall to tip his headed effort over the bar as the half came to a close before Steve Perkins attempted a similar effort.
The second half saw a Gareth Price effort almost sneak in at the post as early as the 48th minute. At the other end, John Pomroy collected the ball on the edge of the FC box but his strike again went wide of the mark. Brian Haule was introduced for FC to give the team an aerial threat and this almost paid off as a useful Gareth Price delivery was headed just over by the big target man. FC’s equaliser came via this route on 66 minutes. Kevin Mealor had enjoyed a good game and his long floated cross was met by Haule whose looping header was expertly converted.
At this stage most Moles' fans would have been grateful for a point but with just eight minutes left on the clock, Chertsey grabbed their winner. A disastrous mix-up in the FC defence saw James Weatherill stranded in no man’s land and Pomroy was able to walk the ball into the net much to the delight of colleagues and the hardy bunch of travelling supporters stationed behind the FC goal. It was no more than the visitors deserved however right on full time, FC almost grabbed an equaliser. Gareth Price, one of the few home players to play to their full potential, put in a dangerous cross shot which substitute Ken Feyi slapped against the post from a narrow angle with Marshall beaten.
