Report by Jools Thomas
FC made the short trip to Creasey Park, the home of Dunstable Town and with the home team challenging for promotion, came away with no points but with a performance particularly in the first half that showed effort and determination. The damage was done early in the second half as the home team fired in three quick fire goals to cancel out FC’s first half opener.
The first chance of any note occurred after a quarter of an hour. A right hand corner was met by the home team’s Mark Leach who headed over the bar. In reply Ken Feyi fed Gareth Price whose on target shot was blocked before spinning away to safety. Terry Dixon then attempted to get things going. Attacking down the right, he cut in before unleashing a powerful shot. James Weatherill narrowed the angle and the shot sped past his left hand post and away for a goal kick. Ben Stevens then blocked an intended pass for Dixon as Dunstable looked to settle. Dixon was again involved at the half hour mark before passing the ball to Leon Cashman. In a carbon copy of Dixon’s earlier chance, Cashman again broke free; Weatherill once more narrowed the angle with the end result still being the same, a shot fired wide.
It was soon after this point, that FC took an unexpected lead. Jamie Rudd battled for the ball on the right before feeding Ken Feyi. Ken did well to deliver a quality cross which the advancing Gareth Price had only to pass into net from a couple of yards.
In response, Kyle Anthony attempted to grab an equaliser almost immediately and his guided header beat Weatherill but also beat the post.
The second half began with FC attacking the covered end of the ground. Unfortunately most of the action was to take place up the other end. It took just seven minutes of the half for Dunstable to grab their equaliser. A corner from the right was met at the far post by central defender Marc Leach who headed home via the post. Two good chances gave the team in blue the chance to extend their lead. Tony Burnett glanced a header over the bar and then Danny Murphy turned and shot in the box before seeing his effort go over.
One goal became two for Dunstable just before the hour mark. A free kick from Nathan Frater beat the wall and the keeper before nestling in the back of the net. A third goal was conceded just two minutes later. Two snapshots were saved well by James Weatherill however the third effort from substitute Lee Roache from close range was unstoppable. At this stage, FC could have been overrun however stout defending in particular from that defensive blend of youth and experience, Rob Tomlin and Steve Perkins prevented further goals.
As Dunstable eased off, it did allow FC one or two attacks or goal. Kevin Mealor found space and he hit a powerful shot over the bar before Sam Batemen found himself unable to capitalise on a one on one with home keeper Sam Head, a young man who did well to cope with the banter from the young Aylesbury fans throughout the whole second half. Sam lifted the ball over the keeper but his lofted shot not only cleared the keeper but the bar as well.
Whilst this was no doubt a comprehensive victory for the home team, FC fans will continue their recent debate over missing players. You cannot help but wonder how much closer some of these games might be if a first choice XI of men such as Cutts, Logie, French, Burnell or Haule were fully fit and available.
