Leading Southern League goal scorer Nat Peacock was the difference tonight as The Moles, fresh from two victories, went to Bedforshire in search of three points against high flying Barton Rovers. Barton are a big physical side who get the ball into dangerous areas quickly and so far that is paying off for them.
Aylesbury started the better of the two teams with the pace of Gareth Price and Jerome Federico causing problem in the Barton defence. On four minutes Price picked the ball up on the touchline cut inside but his shot was deflected for a corner. Lamar Simpson, supporting down the right, then found Jerome Federico on the right wing but his ball knocked into the box came to nothing. As at the weekend keeper Rhys Marshall was picking out Gareth Price regularly with his long goal kicks and on twenty one minutes Price found himself alone and 25 yards out from one of those clearances but his attempted lob of the Barton's Kyle Forster sailed wide. It wasn't all Aylesbury though and Barton did have their chances and they hit the bar on twenty three minutes, but those chances were few and far between as Jack Thomson, covering every blade of grass in the centre of midfield, closed down every Barton foray. He was also though getting forward and and on 26 minutes Thomson found himself twenty five yards from goal and his blockbuster was tipped over the bar by Forster. Jerome Federico continued to cause mayhem down the right but often without an end product, then on 38 mins Peacock struck for his first goal when, after a defensive error, he found himself on the edge of the box and slotted the ball home for a goal against the run of play. FC though, playing all the football, equalised two minutes later when again Federico whipped the ball into the box and Brian Haule sent a bullet header past the Barton keeper for a deserved equaliser.
HT 1-1
The game was a lot more equal in the second half with FC having all the possesion but Barton always looking dangerous as they continued to get the ball forward in to dangerous positions and on fifty one minutes Barton again took the lead when after a series of richochets in the box Nat Paeacok again slotted home. Lee Grant hit the cross bar with a header from a Matt Hall corner on sixty minutes. FC continued to press forward and another great move involved some intricate play between Price, Brian Haule and Federico ended with the ball being deflected over the bar. Then with eight minutes to go FC equalised when a poor clearance from the keeper found Gareth Price all alone and with just Forster to beat he lashed the ball home from the edge of the box. 2-2 and that was that or so we thought!. Three minutes into injury time and with the referee looking at his watch the ball was fired into Aylesbury's box and poacher Peacock somehow though himself at the loose ball to force it past Marshall. 3-2 Barton.
A defeat yes but Aylesbury can go away with a lot of plus points, they played well, moved the ball nicely and created opportunities but lacked that killer instinct.
