FC eased to a league double over Chertsey in this entertaining game at the Affinity Investment Stadium. Three quality goals and a display of attacking flair saw FC comfortably home. An entertainment bonus was the sight of FC fans in fancy dress for the game, cheering on their team’s every effort and even mobbing FC boss Craig Faulconbridge at the final whistle.
Three minutes in and Luke Abraham had the first effort of the game, side footing his shot straight at Town keeper Justin Gray. On twelve minutes Brian Haule had an excellent chance to open the scoring. His shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by observant defenders. Kevin Ayodele, impressing in midfield, followed the rebound up but the keeper gathered safely. At the other end a snap shot by John Pomroy beat FC keeper Richard Roberts and, fortunately for FC, the post. The attention then swung back to the Chertsey goal. Brian Haule attacked on the left and his low drive was shoved round the post by the keeper. Still FC applied the pressure. Ben Stevens was next to test Gray when his looping shot was acrobatically palmed away when a goal seemed inevitable. FC finally gained the breakthrough on 34 minutes. A right hand free kick was delivered into the box to be met by Davis Haule who powered home a header for 1-0. Chertsey attempted to hit back and a header from Matt Morris just cleared the bar just a few seconds after the restart. FC however increased their lead in injury time at the end of the first half. Lamar Simpson and Sonny French both saw shots blocked before the ball found its way to Kevin Ayodele on the wing. Kevin’s cross shot sailed over the keeper’s head and into the net for an unexpected yet very welcome winner.
FC’s No 1 fan April worked very hard during the 1st half with the Player of the Year voting but there wouldn’t have been too many votes for FC defenders in the 50th minute as Chertsey pulled a goal back. Steve Duff found space on the left hand side and fired a powerful low drive past Roberts and into the bottom corner for 2-1. FC were soon back on the offensive however. Sonny French fired in a good effort which took a deflection taking it away from goal and then Shibu Miah had a snap shot which sailed over the bar after he had done the hard work of finding space. FC completed the scoring soon afterwards. A pass from a short corner found its way into the box and after a melee, the ball was picked up by Lamar Simpson who smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Chertsey’s Duff had a chance to pull a goal back but Roberts palmed the effort away. Matt Morris was next to trouble the FC goal as his cross was picked up by Mark Knight. His effort was blocked by Roberts who was injured in the incident for his troubles. Luckily Roberts was able to dust himself down and as time finally ran out for Chertsey, he was able to celebrate 3 well earned points with his team mates.
