Potton United 1-3 AVDFC

Team: Dan McAteer; Sam Austin, Jake Baldwin, Terry Griffiths, Alex McGowan; Alfi Touceda, Dave Brown, Alfie Gaspar, Lewis Workman, Ollie Lemon; Dan Lambeth
Subs: Ben Gill, Luke Nugent, Junior Gyamfi, Kevin Owusu

After the disappointment at the weekend, Phil Granville was forced into a few changes with Covid isolation and injuries meaning that Ollie Lemon, Terry Griffiths, Lewis Workman and Alfie Gaspar were all drafted into the starting line-up. The first 10 minutes saw both teams trying to keep possession and mainly a midfield battle. The first chance of the game was from some good work from Dave Brown who found room and his cross was met by Alfie Gaspar which was well saved.

At the other end Potton fired in a cross which was controlled by Terry Griffiths, playing his first match of the season and his clearance fell to Dan Lambeth but he was just offside. 11 minutes in and Potton were finding their feet and started to pressurise the Dynamos defence. A great through ball looked like they would score but a superb sliding tackle in the box from Jake Baldwin stopped that…and Dan McAteer gathered the loose ball.

Potton were now on top and a cross on 14 minutes was headed inches over the bar as they continued to threaten. Dave Brown was everywhere and tackling well, he won the ball and sent a lovely ball over to Lewis Workman who ran through on goal but hit his shot at the keeper and off for a corner. 18 minutes in and Potton broke the deadlock. A corner wasn’t dealt with by the Dynamos and the ball went out wide and the winger cut in and drilled a low shot which may have been going wide, but an attempted save from Dan McAteer came off his legs and nestled in the back of the net. 1-0 Potton.

Ten minutes later and Potton were now in the ascendancy winning tackles and pushing forward at every opportunity. 28 minutes in and Potton broke the offside trap but Dan McAteer was equal to it, rushing out and smothering the ball well. With 10 minutes of the half remaining Aylesbury were getting back into it and some great feet from Ollie Lemon saw him play a great ball through to Dan Lambeth. He took a touch and rifled a shot against the post. The ball came out to Alfie Gaspar but he couldn’t convert.

The Dynamos ended the half well and a strong run from Jake Balwdin saw him upended and the free kick was inches away from Alex McGowan who was waiting to head towards goal.Dan Lambeth was again a thorn in Potton’s side on 43 minutes as he raced clear and was hauled back inside the box for a clear penalty. Dan got up and took it himself, beating the keeper with a powerful penalty. Half time 1-1.

Aylesbury came out looking the stronger team in the early stages of the second half. Within a minute Ollie Lemon won the ball and played a sublime through ball to Lewis Workman on the right side but he just failed to get his shot away. 48 minutes in and Dave Brown collected a ball from Sam Austin and played Dan Lambeth through but his shot missed the target by a few feet. Dynamos were on top and playing good football. A minute later and Dan McAteer threw the ball out to the ever-willing Jake Baldwin. He raced past a player and hit a lovely ball through to Dan Lambeth. He controlled it and drilled his shot low and hard but the keeper got a touch and the ball looped up, over the keeper and last defender and fell across the line, into the unguarded net. At last, some luck going out way. 2-1 Dynamos.

Potton had a half chance when Terry Griffiths was adjudged to have fouled on the edge of the Dynamos box. The free kick beat the wall, beat Dan McAteer and rattled the upright and subsequently cleared by Alex McGowan. Lucky escape for the Dynamos. On the hour mark it was Potton threatening and a decent attempt was well saved by Dan McAteer in the Dynamos goal, however, it was the away who were looking most likely to score.

On 62 minutes Alfi Touceda played the ball out to Alfie Gaspar and he ran through a challenge and hit a shot which was blocked for a corner. he corner was swung in and Dan Lambeth had another shot blocked as the Dynamos searched for a third. They didn’t have to wait much longer as the next attack saw Alfie Gaspar again down the left flank taken down and a free kick awarded on the apex of the box, 20 yards or so from goal. The usual candidates lined up for a cross but Alfie Gaspar hit a superb free kick over the keeper into the far corner of the underside of the crossbar and in. 3-1 Dynamos.

Phil made his first substitution to freshen it up taking Sam Austin off and replacing with debutant, Luke Nugent. 71 minutes and it was Alfie Gaspar again creating problems. He received a ball from Dan Lambeth and fired a low shot which was blocked by a defender sliding in.
Youngster Junior Gyamfi then entered the field, replacing Ollie Lemon in the middle. Junior was straight in the action winning the ball and finding Dave Brown and he played a lovely ball to Lewis Workman. His pace took him away from his marker and he curled a great effort just over the bar. So close to a 4th goal.

83 minutes and their were some rash tackles flying around as Potton became more frustrated. Dave Brown was taken out again, resulting in a Yellow Card for the Potton player. Minutes later Dan Lambeth was also upended as he was racing clear…and another Yellow produced.
Luke Nugent collected a ball out from Terry Griffiths and beat his man, then playing in Dan Lambeth but his cross was cleared. The final sub on 87 minutes saw Kevin Owusu come on for the exhausted Dan Lambeth.

The final moments of the game saw another rash tackle from the Potton No.2 who collected his second Yellow card and was sent off.
Final Score: Potton 1-3 Dynamos
