Whatever your thoughts on the last few weeks, no one can deny watching FC hasn’t been exciting. Perhaps the management would prefer it another way but it certainly makes for entertaining football.
In this league game at the Affinity Investments Stadium, FC took the game to Biggleswade from the off and had Kurt Morlese shown a little composure in the very first attack of the game, then FC could have taken an early lead. Brian Haule and Jonathan Constant both worried the visitors’ defence with low shots before a break in the 16th minute saw a quality ball delivered into the FC box in a quick-fire Biggleswade attack. Joe Mason had only to slide in to make contact and give the visitors the lead. FC continued to fire from range with Jamie Connor and Wayne O’Sullivan both attempting shots. The visitors could have increased their lead on 31 minutes when Max York screwed the ball wide when a goal bound effort seemed inevitable.
FC struggled to make any impact in the opening few minutes in the 2nd half and it wasn’t until the hour mark when the first chance was created; a Wayne O’Sullivan free kick which away keeper Michael McEntegart tipped over the bar. On 68 minutes however Biggleswade doubled their lead. Joe Mason attacked down the right and after beating a defender placed the ball low past home keeper Simeon Charles’ right hand post.
It was then the game was turned on its head. With 13 minutes left to play, Brian Haule broke into the away box and after he lost control of the ball in a strong challenge, Wayne O’Sullivan nipped in to slide the ball under the keeper for 1-2. 1-2 soon became 2-2 when, with 8 minutes left to play, a cross from the left was met by a leaping Brian Haule who rose higher than anyone and looped the ball over the advancing McEntegart. Most FC fans would have been happy with a point at that stage but Haule had other ideas. Just 3 minutes later and he barnstormed into the Biggleswade box from the left and rifled the ball into the bottom corner for the winner much to the delight of FC fans.
A very satisfying end to what had only 20 minutes earlier seemed a lost cause. Biggleswade will no doubt be disappointed but as Cambridge City and AFC Hayes have recently found out, you write Aylesbury FC off at your peril.
