It was a case of back to the drawing board for manager Craig Faulconbridge and the FC management as theirteam suffered a very disappointing defeat against Burnham on a cool night in South Buckinghamshire. Two second half goals did the damage but if truth be told, the gulf was somewhat wider than the score line suggests.
Craig led from the front and it was his header that narrowly missed the post after just five minutes. In response Burnham’s Kieron Knight released a snapshot that FC keeper Simeon Charles did well to save. Midway through the first half and Wayne O’Sullivan delivered a quality ball from the left which Ryan Blake blazed over the bar when a goal seemed a certainty. Burnham however were starting to apply pressure, winning those 50-50 midfield balls and making the FC defence work. Chances by Knight and by partner Hendry could have given the home side a lead by the interval.
That opening goal occurred within minutes of the restart. Lewis Driver found himself in acres of space and his well guided header easily beat FC’s Charles. On 60 minutes the lead was 2-0. A calamitous mix up between keeper and defence allowed Aaron Couch the gift of stroking the ball home unchallenged. It was a head in hands moment but FC almost pullled a goal back immediately. The industrious Wayne O’Sullivan found space in the home box and with a deft turn hit a sweet volley that beat the keeper but slapped off the bar and away to safety. FC had already had to shuffle their pack after Brian Haule had gone off injured and replacement James Faulkner brought further ideas to the attack. A header was cleared off the line and a few minutes later he was again unlucky not to score. He took the ball round the keeper but the angle was too acute and his shot missed. This was the last real show of fight from FC. Burnham roundly countered in midfield, and strolled through the final minutes to a comfortable victory.
