Match Report from Biggleswade United

United secured their first clean sheet in the league since the opening day of the season as they eased past Aylesbury Vale Dynamos at Second Meadow on Tuesday night. Goals from Lorrell Smith and Enrique Amador were enough to clinch the three points on an evening where the hosts controlled the contest for long periods and could’ve added more gloss to the scoreline.

The home side were punished for a sloppy start last time out against Dunstable Town and appeared intent to avoid a similar situation this time around. Kai Ashley’s cross-come-shot clattered off the inside of the post before Dave Parkinson’s low shot was palmed away by Aylesbury goalkeeper James Weatherill.

United’s midfield, in particular, commanded proceedings in the early stages with the trio of James Bishop, Amador and Jaiden Irish - who returned to the club this week - playing a number of incisive passes into the final third. It was a long, straight ball, however, which undid the Dynamos’ defence and unsurprisingly it was the pacey frontman Smith who latched on to it and cooly slotted home to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Struggling to assert themselves in the game, the visitors did still managed a muster a couple of decent opportunities with a shot blazed over from the right of the penalty area and effort turned wide on the swivel by their hulking striker Derek Feyi. Charlie Briggs was Man-of-the-Match on the night for his work at centre-half to preserve the clean sheet but his efforts at the other end were less effective as he couldn’t adjust his feet to turn Amador’s corner goalwards.

United’s latest man between the sticks was called into action a few minutes before the close of the half as Dylan Berry - borrowed from Northampton Town - denied Bruno Brito. Irish’s strike narrowly evaded the top, right corner with the aid of a deflection as the home side’s dominance only yielded the solitary goal by halftime.

In the second period, they wouldn’t have to wait long to add to their lead as less than a minute after the restart Amador produced a strike to delight the home crowd. Weatherill came sprawling out of his goal to smother the approaching Smith but he wouldn’t recover his position before the loose ball broke for Amador roughly 40 yards out and the Spaniard clipped it masterfully into the vacant net.

Despite extending their lead, United continued to apply pressure with the away side frustrated in their attempts to get back into the match. They would unsettle their hosts for a brief period, however, with a couple of decisive interventions on the goalline required to keep Aylesbury out. Ben Gill then forced Berry into a good save down to his right as United’s sense of control eluded them for the first time this evening.

Having weathered that storm, the hosts were able to close this one efficiently with substitutes Carl Chambers and Charlie Clayton combining before saw his strike blocked from close range. There was still time for Berry to pull off a top save to deny the Aylesbury forward from a few yards out and ensure United emerged with the three points and a clean sheet.

The result never looked in doubt really and it was a product of a highly accomplished performance that continues United’s strong home form.
