Nathan McGreavy’s last gasp injury time strike saw the Dynamo’s unbeaten away run come to an end, as Harpenden overcame a below-par Aylesbury side by one goal to nil at Rothamsted Park.
In a game that won’t live too long in the memory of either sets of supporters, it was the visitors who enjoyed most of the possession early on, but chances were few and far between. Alfi Touceda scuffed a shot goalward from the edge of the penalty area which didn’t inconvenience Alex Desmond in the home net, whilst Bruno Brito fired a speculative free kick high into the hedgerow behind the goal.
The Harps grew into the game with Connor Deadman having some success on the left-hand flank, putting in two dangerous crosses in quick succession, but nobody in a yellow shirt could convert as the balls whistled across the face of James Weatherill’s goal.
The biggest chance of the half fell to the hosts on 32 minutes when Harpenden captain Josh Humbert turned Max Farrelly on the penalty spot before seeing his effort cannon back off the post.
Half Time – Harpenden Town 0 Dynamos 0
With no changes for either side at the break, the stalemate continued. Harpenden were benefitting from long spells of possession but seemed to run out of ideas in the final third, whilst the Dynamos were struggling to create too much in the way of goalscoring opportunities themselves.
The game finally burst into action around 15 minutes from time with Mo Koita entering the fray for the hosts replacing veteran striker Bobby Dance. The winger appeared to be full of running and was causing problems for Harry Scott and Jayvon Case-Jarrett on the right flank. First the wide man crossed for Connor Deadman who sliced his effort horrendously wide from 6 yards out, before Koita went one-on-one himself again James Weatherill who made a smart save with his body.
For all Harpenden’s late pressure it would appear that both teams were to take away a point apiece for their efforts, but as the watch hit 90 minutes – heartbreak for the Dynamos, as Nathan McGreavy fired home into the bottom left corner after an earlier effort was blocked courageously by Dan Wilson.
