With the retirement of Luke Cray and Ben Stevens unavailable for this gaame, it was Austin Schofield, injured in the first game of the season who made his full home debut in the centre of defence partnering Jordan Jenkins. Sam Odusoga replaced Jordan Frederick in midfield and Bruno Brito and Martin Griggs also returned with Ryan Young dropping to the bench.
The pitch at Haywood Way is always going to be sticky at this time of the year and today was no exception. This made for a difficult surface where playing a passing game was always going to be difficult. Martin Griggs had the first opportunity on just six minute when he was played through on goal, after Dave Corran's defensive slide tackle fell to him, Griggs saw keeper Dan Green off his line and attempted the lob, but the keeper recovered to gather the ball.
Midway through the first half and Bruno Brito, who looked bright all afternoon, cleverly flicked the ball into the oath of Harry Scott who played a sublime ball into the danger zone but it was cleared over the bar bar by Payne. The resultant corner fell to Griggs in the area but his shot was parried wide.
Welwyn started to come more into the game as the half drew to an end. On thirty seven minutes they caught the FC defence sleeping with a quick free kick, Stuart Zanone had the chance to shoot but Jordan Jenkins recovered well and put in a goal saving tackle and the ball was cleared. Two minutes later Zanone played an inviting ball into the back post, Craig Carby though was wise to the danger and headed away.
Half Time 0-0
FC came flying out of the blocks in the second half and Some good interplay between Scott, Griggs and Brito ended with Brito skying the ball over the bar, Brito then had a cross from the left which caught keeper Green out but the keeper's blushes are spared as the ball drifted onto the top of the net.
The visitors had a good chance to break the deadlock on seventy two minutes when captain Danny Payne met a corner at the near post but somehow managed to head the ball over the bar. Ryan Young was bought on with just ten minutes to play and almost had an immediate impact when Carl Tappin played the nippy winger in down the left, he cut in on his right foot but his curling effort just missed the far post.
