FC's recent good form meant that a win at the hugely impressive Glassworld Stadium wasn't vital and therefore the team may have been fairly satisfied as a point each did nothing for Histon's chances of survival keeping the Cambridgeshire side a safe distance away. The game itself started at lightning pace but after an opening ten minutes that suggested a high scoring game, it descended into a mistake-strewn stroll that left the casual observer with plenty of evidence of why this was a bottom of the table struggle.
Brian Haule and then Josh Bamford had goalbound strikes blocked by desperate home defending as early as the fourth minute before Histon cleared the lines. Just a minute later and FC took the lead. A corner over saw the hugely impressive Jordan Jenkins rise above all and place a perfect header into the top of the net to the delight of the massed travelling Moles behind the goal.
This should have been the spur to kick on but just two minutes later the home side were level. A ball in to the box saw utter confusion reign and Alex O'Brien miscued his clearance instead swiping the ball into his own net. It was desperately disappointing however, FC remained positive. Ty Deacon hit a perfect ball on the bounce and home keeper Ayden Duffy clawed the ball away, a move that brought applause from all of the 203 spectators at the ground.
Histon had conceded 83 goals in the season up to the 19th minute and defender Danny Gould prevented number 84 with an unbelievable goal line clearance. Ty Deacon tried again from 15 yards, this team beating the keeper but as the ball sailed goalwards, perhaps four foot off the ground, the full back somehow hooked the ball from behind him and away to safety.
In the remainder of the half, Harry Scott on the FC wings was a constant menace to the home defence as he looked to feed Deacon and Brian Haule. With the clock ticking down, O'Brian hit a shot that flew just past the post and in response, Simon Unwin played in a cross that David Haule blocked allowing Moles keeper James Weatherill to gather.
The second half saw very few chances as FC dropped deeper with Histon looked for a break. Deacon hit a hopeful shot that Duffy saved easily. Aston Goss also came into the game more with some useful runs down the right wing.
Tommy Wright for the home team hit an effort going wide but a deflection off the unlucky Alex O'Brien forced Weatherill to dash for the rebound. Later a free kick from outside the box didn't produce the result Aston Goss wanted and the tame shot was claimed by a grateful Duffy.
Glenn and Ruddock Yala had come on to add fresh legs to the Moles however, the game became punctuated with needless free kicks and petty fouls. Some may be attributed to gamesmanship and efforts to break up play however there were some spiteful offences. The referee could have been unsighted on some occasions allowing serious offences to go unpunished yet producing cards for seemingly innocuous challenges, the most puzzling being a Glenn Yala challenge on the keeper.
Histon had been punting in long balls that Man of the Match Jordan Jenkins happily headed back all game yet when the home team forced corners and freekicks, they did look more threatening. From one of these, Histon produced their best chance of a winner. Most Moles had been impressed by the distinctive pony tailed Simon Unwin and his quality cross allowed captain Max York to pounce with header with Weatherill tipping the effort over his post thereby finally settling the outcome of the match.
