FC produced a display of real class and quality in this pulsating game against Petersfield Town at Haywood Way

Report by Jools Thomas

The four goals, two other side of half town, were either scored or created by Lynton Goss who enjoyed a starring role. Of equal importance was a clean sheet enjoyed by the team as Aylesbury attempt to clear the backlog of postponed fixtures.

FC were out of the blocks immediately. A Jamie Rudd quick fire cross caused concern for the away defence and this was followed by a Jonny Montgomery effort where only an outstretched leg prevented a goal. Gareth Price enjoyed a great game and he was in the action as early as the fourth minute with a low shot that away keeper and ex Mole Anthony Elder managed to hold on to with more than a little difficulty.

Jordan Neal hit a half volley for Petersfield which although well struck lacked the accuracy to trouble James Weatherill in the FC net. Price responded with what should have been the opener. The winger chased down an errant back pass and his chip beat the keeper but also the bar. Chances were coming thick and fast for the home team by now. Brian Haule’s flicked header just cleared the post and the same man was unlucky a few moments later as his pile driver from a Jamie Rudd cross flew just the wrong side of the post.

Aston Goss playing at full back was the next FC man to have a go, hitting a free kick again with power but without the necessary accuracy to worry the Petersfield keeper. It seemed however it was only a matter of time before the first goal and so it proved on 23 minutes. Rob Tomlin hit an overhead kick forward which caused real panic in the away defence. A defensive header back to Ender was seized upon by Lynton Goss who, although under pressure, poked the ball home for 1-0. Lynton doubled his side’s lead soon afterwards. A ball found the young forward on the edge of the box and with a skilful side foot; Goss placed the ball past the keeper and into the bottom corner.

The second half began with the away team almost immediately pulling a goal back but Jamie Ford could only place his header directly at James Weatherill from just a few yards when a nod either side would have produced a certain goal. Petersfield did have much more of a say in this opening period of the second half and an away goal could really have changed the outlook of the game but in their haste to commit, gaps were left at the back. These were exploited by amongst others, Brian Haule, who saw his shot cleared from the line after he had turned the keeper in the box. A cross from Oliver Bailey allowed Howard Neighbour a shot on goal. James Weatherill did well to beat the effort away as the game hung in the balance.

Jamie Rudd’s curling effort on 71 minutes just cleared the post and was a sign of FC killing the game off. A Daniel Murphy free kick caused a few headaches for the away defence with Ender managing to gather through a crowded penalty area and this was the cue for Lynton to take centre stage. With four minutes left on the clock, Lynton Goss grabbed the ball and with skills aplenty, he fed the ball to Gareth Price whose low blast contained too much venom for Anthony Ender with the effort going under the keeper for 3-0.

Lynton Goss capped a fine performance on the stroke of full time. A cross into the box was unselfishly chested down by Davis Haule into the path of Goss and he gleefully swept home the effort much to the delight of team mates and supporters.
