Chances were few and far between for both teams and it was little surprise that the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
FC gave a debut to Mathieu Varnica in place of the injured James Weatherill with Ben Stevens recovering quicker than expected in the heart of defence. FC also gave places on the bench to Aston Goss, Brian Haule and Davis Haule.
Jeanmal Prosper had one of the first chances of the game when he headed over from a Gareth Price cross before Leighton’s Lewis McBride almost profited from a mix up in the FC defence but no team mates were ready to meet his sweeping cross.
On the quarter of an a hour mark, Lynton Goss beat the away keeper Brad Kirkwood to the ball but the cross again failed to find a teammate. Aaron McKee hit a dipping shot on the half volley after 30 minutes but it didn’t dip enough and went over the bar. Finally a 44th minute corner was met by Town’s Jordan Jenkins who could have done better with a header he placed wide.
FC’s first real chance of the second half didn’t happen until the 67th minute but it was a move of quality. Brian Haule played a reverse pass and Eddie Smith was unlucky with his shot as Kirkwood moved to block.
As the game moved to its conclusion more space did open up. Brian Haule won the ball on the right touchline and his pass to Eddie Smith allowed the former Slough man the chance to hit a snapshot where a goal was only prevented by an outstretched leg. A minute or two later Brian Haule lofted a shot over the keeper but also over the bar.
In the last move of the game, Leighton could very easily have taken all the points. Craig Maisiri hit a bobbling shot from the right hand side which young keeper Varnica did very well to tip round the post and so the game finished with honours even. Not a great outcome for either side.
