FC took time to settle and an early Diamonds corner bamboozled the whole FC defence before going to safety. Tom Lorraine forced James Weatherill into a smart save soon afterwards with the only goal of the game arriving a couple of minutes’ later. Diamonds’ Brad Harris had his shot blocked in the box and Lorraine was the most alert man on the field as he hit the rebound past FC’s Weatherill.
FC’s FA Cup hangover continued and the home side dominated in much the same manner as Chesham had, some four days previously. Diamonds clipped a post and then a Liam Dolman free kick made Weatherill work for his wages and “Weathers” confidence would have been done no harm as he rushed to save the shot.
FC’s first effort came via Ryan O’Toole. Although only a half chance, the striker forced home keeper Matt Finlay into a save. There had been a running battle the entire first half between Terry Dixon and the home defenders and the FC striker earned himself a booking for retaliation despite Terry being victim of an aggressive challenge. Moles fans were clearly incensed by the lack of equality being displayed by the officials.
Lynton Goss was unlucky with an effort and then James Dobson was unlucky not to equalise as he forced Harris into a save as half time approached.
Like Tuesday night, FC had much the better of the 2nd period. Terry Dixon had a very eventful match and the ex-West Ham striker had a full bloodied effort saved by Harris as he led the hunt for an equaliser. Not to be outdone, Claudiu Hoban tested Weatherill who emerged from the contest the winner. Lynton Goss’ shot mid-way through the half went the same way as the passing Spitfires – up in the air.
FC’s final chance fell to Brian Haule. As the powerful striker bore down on goal, an outstretched defender’s boot blocked his route and the chance went begging.
