Aylesbury FC continued their recent impressive form against a determined Egham Town team. Despite falling behind to a soft goal, the team’s heads did not go down and as chances developed the team took advantage. Egham will certainly claim that 3-1 was not a correct reflection of the game with the score line being flattering to FC. Whatever opinions exist, the only undeniable fact is that the home took all three points to stretch the gap still further from their nearest promotion rivals.
FC looked lively from the off and Aston Goss demonstrated this with some fine wing work in the opening few minutes. This almost resulted in an opening from Davis Haule, however the veteran midfield man hit his half valley was struck wide. Egham also had attacking ideas typified by Troy Furguson who was given the freedom of Quarrendon to crash a spectacular shot against the FC bar. Shaken by this, the home team looked to find the opener. Bradley Wadkins was instrumental in playing in Ryan O’Toole however Ryan’s shot was off target. How the opening goal wasn’t scored in the next move, only the FC strikers will know as Ryan O’Toole’s corner caused an almighty goalmouth scramble but alas no goal much to the amazement of all Moles fans.
O’Toole was again in the thick of the action on the half hour mark with his powerful strike producing a quality save from Egham’s Jamie Cunningham. It wasn’t all one way traffic however. Seb Casrello floated in a dangerous free kick which James Weatherill was forced to punch clear and then Brandon Matthew attempted a placed shot which Weatherill was more than equal to. The final action of the half saw Egham in the ascendency with Weatherill bravely saving at the feet of Matthew.
Connor Baker had an outstanding evening and it was his cross shot on 50 minutes that had Cunningham earning his wages as he pulled off a classy save. Wadkins and Aston Goss later combined for a half chance but this was just a prelude to the away team taking the lead. Brandon Matthew struck what appeared to be a hopeful strike goalwards however James Weatherill took his eye off the ball for a vital second allowing it to wriggle under his body.
The lead lasted just a few minutes as Dave Deeney, another FC man to enjoy an excellent evening, smashed the ball home after impressive work on the right wing to level the scores. Many FC fans would have taken a point at this stage but the team, encouraged by Adam Logie, took the game to the visitors. Patience and concentration were the key words as FC sought all three points. These qualities were certainly missing when Danny Bassett sprang the offside trap and danced round James Weatherill. James has certainly helped his defenders out on more than one occasion this season and therefore he will have been grateful to see Kyle Anthony return the favour and block the goalbound strike.
Gareth Price was introduced to the proceedings and his impact was immediate. A devastating right wing cross bamboozled the away defence and fellow substitute Ben Stevens, making a welcome return after several weeks out, had only to slam the ball with power into an unguarded net to give his side the lead.
Tails were up and as the game drew to a close, the fast paced Ryan O’Toole broke clear and despite Cunningham narrowing the angle, Ryan was able to neatly side foot the ball past the keeper much to the delight of teammates and supporters alike.
