Aylesbury FC 2 Rugby Town 0

Mike Farquharson20 Dec 2014 - 18:51

Winning streak continues as FC ease past play off rivals Rugby and stay third.

Manager Steve Bateman started the same team that had won against Bedford last weekend, with new signing Terry Dixon and the returning Adam Logie starting from the bench.

In front of 283 fans it was Rugby who started the quickest of the two sides on a difficult pitch, Rugby had a lot of early possession and a slip from Ben Stevens let in Mitch Piggon but his shot sailed over the bar. Aylesbury though were growing into the game, Lynton Goss had a shot from 25 yards which went wide, Bradley Wadkins went close and then a move up the left ended with Daniel Murphy crossing but Lynton Goss headed weakly over. Rugby then had their best chance when they found themselves in the box a snap shot was saved by James Weatherill and hit the post, rebounded back into play to a Rugby forward but as he pulled his foot back to fire the trigger a last ditch lunge by Murphy managed to block the shot and the ball ran to safety.

Murphy and Aston Goss were linking up well down the left and one of those moves ended with Murphy firing the ball into the box, Kyle Anthony first tried to shoot, the ball then fell to Wadkins but he also was unable to finish. It was FC now who were dominating the game and after 31minutes that domination was rewarded when Brian Haule found himself on the left edge of the box, he cut the ball back to Wadkins who smashed the ball into the top of the net for a well deserved lead. Rugby though were still looking dangerous with Mitch Piggon often their out ball and he had a chance to equalise just before half time but fired the ball wide.

Rugby'a bext chance came just before half time when Piggon was adjudged to have been bought down in the area by Keeper Weatherill and a penalty was awarded but Moles fans need not have worried as Weatherill has saved his last three penalties in open play and this was to be no exception, the ball was fired hard and to his right but Weatherill went the right way and palmed the ball away for another fantastic save.

FC continued their domination of the game in the second half but needed another goal to ease the fans nerves and that goal came after 69 minutes, Lynton Goss picked up the ball on the right and fired in a low cross which was met by the sliding Bradley Wadkins for his second goal of the game and that was that, Aylesbury were in complete control, Wadkins running the midfield and the whole team performing and working for each other.

FC now face Marlow at home on the 27th and United away on New Year's Day as they try and keep the run going.
