Boss Steve Bateman made just one from the side that had defeated Beaconsfield last weekend with leading goalscorer Sonny French dropping to the bench to be replaced by Ben Bateman. New signing Terry Dixon started from a strong bench that included French, Connor Baker, Gareth Price and Jamie Rudd, showing the riches of talent that Bateman now has to choose from.
Aylesbury's difficulties, despite being second top scorers in the division has been putting the ball in the back of the net, if they had found their shooting boots both today and in previous games teams would have been put away a lot earlier. Bedford was no different,. Aylesbury started well with Ben Bateman prominent in the middle of the park. With quarter of an hour gone the Moles should have taken the lead, Lynton Goss broke free and found himself with just the keeper to beat but hit it straight at Garry Malone in the Bedford goal, the first of a number of chances that went begging. Five minutes later a chipped ball in from Bateman found Brian Haule but his header went over the bar/ Lynton Goss then had another chance but again managed to find the keeper rather than the net. Aylesbury did eventually take the lead when a free kick from Ben Stevens was eventually met by the sliding Ben Bateman who blasted home from four yards. Bedford did have their chances but the Aylesbury defence held firm, Daniel Murphy making a last ditch tackle to prevent a goal scoring opportunity just before half time.
HT 0-1
It was a much more determined Bedford side that started the second half and FC found it difficult to get out of their own half, Brad Wadkins was as muscular as ever in the midfield, breaking up attacks but also creating opportunities. Then after 57 minutes the game was over, a corner was cleared by the Bedford defence but fell on the volley to Wadkins who hammered the ball home for a well deserved two nil lead. There were still chances for Aylesbury to extend the lead, Aston Goss beat the keeper but couldn't control the ball and shot wide, Kyle Anthony shot over the bar and with Stevens and Anthony marshalling the defence there was never any real opportunity for The Eagles to get back in to the game.
Aylesbury remain third and will entertain Rugby next weekend hoping to keep the winning streak going.
