Aylesbury went into this game knowing that this would be a big week in determining whether the play off ambitions of the club were achievable. Rugby Town today, a club that for the past two seasons had finished runners up in the Central Division and then League leaders Kettering Town, at Haywood Way next weekend.
With Bradley Wadkins suspended, Adam Logie not 100%fit, Sean Sonner unavailable and new striker Ryan O'Toole becoming a father yesterday, Manager Steve Bateman had to shuffle the pack. Danny Murphy came in at left back with Connor Baker switching to Centre Half and Kyle Anthony partnering Ben Bateman in the centre of midfield.
The first thirty minutes were a bit of a non event with both teams aware of the importance of the game and cancelling each other out, but that changed on 33 minutes when Brian Haule got his second goal in two games when he got in front of Rugby keeper Richard Morris and headed the ball home after a floated cross into the box. Five minutes later and the FC faithful were in raptures as Haule made it 2-0. Aston Goss's cross shot appeared to be heading into the goal, but deflected off of Haule and into the net.
Rugby though got back into the game a minute later as Justin Marsden turned turned neatly in the box and hammered the ball under James Weatherill to make it 2-1 and the half drew to a close with The Moles in front.
The second half was an exhibition of controlled football by Aylesbury who never left the home side back into the game and the two goal advantage was restored by Aston Goss who's shot across Morris found the corner of the net, his eight of the season. Subs Davis Haule, Adam Logie and Lynton Goss replaced Bateman, French and Aston Goss but the pattern of the game didn't change with FC in control and they closed out the match to stay third behind Kettering and Hanwell and with a massive game against the leaders next Saturday at Haywood Way.
