FC kicked off their 17/18 pre-season friendlies with an extremely useful run out against a strong and competitive MK Dons

Report by Jools Thomas

The Dons side contained a fair sprinkling of first teamers. Bearing in mind the Dons were in the 3rd game of pre-season and FC in their 1st, manager Davis Haule should be very happy with the display even if his team had lost to a goal five minutes from time.

FC started the game with many familiar faces returning including experienced first teamers Kieron Schmidt, Johnny Montgomery and Jeanmal Prosper.

The Dons opened the scoring as early as the 6th minute when Robbie Muirhead hit a shot that FC keeper James Weatherill could only parry into the path of ex-England under 17 midfielder Giorgio Rasulo who slipped the ball into an unguarded net. Jeanmal Prosper hit a scuffed shot goalwards that the MK defence cleared and soon afterwards a decent right wing cross by Harry Cross was met by Brian Haule who could only poke the effort wide. A Jeanmal Prosper header forced the MK keeper into a spectacular save with the rebound being stabbed home. The celebrations however were cut short when the referee noted an offside infringement.

This was not to hinder FC's progress as a series of corners and free kicks put great pressure on the MK Dons defence, the most inviting of these being a cleared corner, which Moles player of the year Jordan Jenkins hit back with venom forcing the keeper to scramble. Still FC were making all the running and the energetic Harry Scott cracked the ball high over the bar after an impressive turn in the area. A slide rule pass that failed to find its man was the only threat from the Dons in this period.

Charlie Hawtin is a player that most at Haywood Way are delighted to see back in red and black and it was his impressive diving header on 40 minutes, which deservedly levelled the score to set up the second half.

It was not until 20 minutes of that second half that its first real chance occurred when Keiron Lataille hit a dangerous low shot. A header by Connor McGrandles flew just over the bar as the Dons attacked. Another header this time for Lataille whooshed high and Alex O'Brien slapped a low effort through a crowded box however, this never really caused the Dons any issues.

With five minutes to go, MK Dons grabbed their winner and it was a goal of real quality. Sam Nombe is a striker who has recently signed his first professional contract and if his winner is anything to go by, his future looks very bright. A through ball saw the striker in a race to the ball and with the keeper James Weatherill advancing quickly, Nombe deftly chipped the ball and into an empty net for the winner.
