Match Report Jools Thomas
After the visitors had taken an early second half lead, FC pushed forward only to be caught twice on quick fire breaks as Town put the game out of the reach of the home side. A late FC goal failed to disguise what had been a disappointing display.
It had been a bright start for the home team with two efforts just over the bar in the first few minutes from Kieron Turner and then Martin Griggs. Hanwell had their first chance on seven minutes when James Simmonds placed a header wide from a decent cross. A couple of minutes later, Town's Anton Robinson hit a sweet shot that was tipped over the bar by Ashley Jenkins. From that corner, away captain Tom Duffy had a decent shot blocked by the FC defence.
FC were unlucky not to take the lead on 18 minutes and what a goal it would have been. The ball fell to Johnny Montgomery and his crashing drive from some 25 yards out was palmed away from the top corner by a sprawling Melvin Minter. Hanwell recovered and attacked once more and it was Robinson again along with Tyler Christian-Law who had fair chances to give their side the lead. A combination of bad luck and last ditch defending prevented a goal and at this stage, it was anyone's guess as to which way the game would swing.
Griggs had a one on one with the keeper on 36 minutes but Minter saved with his legs and as the half drew to a close, the same man could only fire over the bar after a decent Turner right field cross.
The second half saw a Ben Stevens' flicked header fly just wide but things altered the visitors' way on 56 minutes when they took the lead. Progress on the left hand side allowed Simmonds the simplest of chances to sidefoot the ball home from close range with a static FC defence watching in shock.
This prompted FC to push forwards, a dangerous thing to do when facing a swift and mobile away attack. Griggs almost profited from a Jamie Lofthouse-Smith pass in the 59th minute and this was followed by Turner who whipped in a teasing ball that teammates failed to read. FC continued to press and Griggs again saw his shot beaten away.
A series of substitutions both for home and away teams included the introduction of home manager Danny Gordon as FC moved into a 3-5-2 formation. This gamble would always leave space at the back but as the minutes ticked down, it really was a case of that or defeat. So it proved. Away substitute Rory Jennings took advantage of a disastrous mix up in the FC defence before rounding the keeper to poke the ball into an empty net. To add salt into the wound, a mix up between the otherwise excellent Ben Stevens and his keeper once again allowed Jennings the freedom of the SRD Stadium as he leisurely stroked the ball into an empty net in an almost carbon copy move.
Kieron Turner's lofted lob in the very last minute was of decent quality but there was no getting away from the fact that Aylesbury FC's FA Cup dream had been well and truly shattered.
