Both sides came into the game in good form with The Moles having defeated Leighton 8-1 earlier in the week and The Poppies heading the Division 1 Central table. Ben Stevens and Brian Haule were ruled out before the game and so four goal hero from midweek Lynton Goss came into the attack and Bradley Wadkins returned in midfield allowing Kyle Anthony to partner Connor Baker in the centre of defence.
With a healthy crowd inside Haywood Way it was FC that had the first opportunity when a Daniel Murphy free kick almost deceived everyone but was eventually scrambled to safety. Kettering had obviously done their homework and never allowed the pace of the Aylesbury front three to become a factor. The flow of the game wasn't helped by a number of free kicks and a long stoppage for an injury to Kettering's Jonathan Thorpe who was eventually taken off with a nasty looking injury. Whils there were no real clear cut chances for either side FC did come close when Price found Wadkins who's turn and snap shot was held by Keeper Jamie McAlindon.
Then after 21 minutes Kettering took the lead, Gooding’s free kick was met by Clifton’s header, which James Weatherill managed to get a hand to but the ball fell to Jason Lee and he stroked the loose ball home. Aston Goss put in a great cross from the left which Sean Sonner just failed to reach
In a long stoppage period,McAlindon punched the ball away from Sonny French, and Kettering striker Ogbonna fired over at the other end.
Aylesbury came out n the second half with much more determination and started to play the football we know that they can, and after 50 minutes they were level. Lynton Goss picked the ball up on the right, beat a defender and pulled the ball back into the box where he found Jeanmal Prosper who cut in onto his left foot and smashed the ball past the Kettering keeper.
From this point it was Aylesbury who looked most likely to score, a Sonner flick on almost put in Lynton Goss but the keeper 10 yards outside the box just got there first. Gareth Price picked the ball up 25 yards out and his pile driver was tipped over by the now busy McAlindon in the Poppies goal.
But on 76 minutes it was Dubi Ogbonna that settled the game. The ball had been cleared by the FC defence, and the ball was played back across to the left for the striker WHO stepped inside and unleashed a vicious right foot shot past the stranded Weatherill.
Weatherill unfortunately picked up a nasty arm injury in added time as he challenged for a ball with Andy Hall on the left as the wide man was going through. Weatherill landed awkwardly, and was carried off with a nasty arm injury.
