After the fantastic comeback against AFC Hayes at the weekend, Aylesbury went into this Red Insure Cup 1st Round game against their Premier Division opposition, Cambridge City, with a lot of optimism, but on the first 45 minutes display it seemed that much of that optimism was going to be misplaced. It started well with Sonny French playing in new boy Jonathan Contstant making his full debut firing low and forcing a save from the Cambridge Keeper, Zac Barrett. That though really was the last we saw of Aylesbury as an attacking force in that first half as Cambridge pinged the ball around on the floor with a lot of class which left The Moles on the back foot and struggling to get a foothold.
Constant and Faulkner manfully tried to lead the line but were far too often left on their own as Aylesbury were pushed further and further back. Richard Roberts was forced into a number of saves as wave upon wave of Cambridge attacks had Aylesbury struggling to stay on level terms. Jonathan Constant, always looking for the ball had a couple of opportunities but was often left isolated as the Cambridge pressure continued to mount. That pressure finally told after 21 minutes when a first time ball in was smashed home by Craig Hammond from 10 yards out to give the visitors a deserved lead. That lead was doubled in the 35th minute when James Brighton slipped the ball beyond Roberts to make it 2-0 and for all the world it looked liked Aylesbury had no way back. HT 0-2
At half time George Tomlin was replaced by Kurt Morlese, with James Faulkner moving alongside Craig Faulconbridge at the back in to sure up an already unlikely looking back four. The move paid off as right from the start it was a much more even game with the Aylesbury Midfield, now closer to the forwards starting to have an impact and to push Cambridge back. Aylesbury were back in the game on 54 minutes when a ball whipped in by Luke Abraham was met on the penalty spot by the ever willing Jonathan Constant and fired past the helpless away keeper 1-2. Two minutes later and the teams, unbelievably based on the first half performance, were level when a melee in the Cambridge box ended with substitute Kurt Morlese toe poking the ball past Barrett. Cambridge then seemed to energise themselves again and dragged themselves back into the game which appeared to be heading for extra time, but on 88 minutes Aylesbury produced a winner. Some lovely interplay between Sonny French and Constant on the edge of the box produced a final opportunity for Jamie Connor who, again like Saturday slotted the ball home for an unexpected victory for the home team
