Godalming Town preview

Admin admin23 Jan 2015 - 06:32

This weekend Aylesbury look to stay top of the league as they entertain The G's at Haywood Way, KO 3PM Saturday 24th January.

Godalming Town currently lie eleventh in Division One Central with thirty four points from their twenty five games. Andy Hunt's took charge last season following the departure of former managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood and in his first term The G's finished in a respectable 18th place.

The club traces its origins to Godalming United FC, a club formed in 1950 by former pupils of Godalming Grammar School. In 1970 Surrey Senior League side Farncombe folded. Godalming took over their debts and their Meadrow ground, changing their name to Godalming & Farncombe FC and the name of the ground to Weycourt.

The club was accepted into the Combined Counties League in 1979, and in 1980 changed its name again, this time to Godalming Town FC. The team were league champions in 1983–84 but subsequently slipped down the league until by the early 1990s they were regularly battling against relegation.

In 1992 the Guildford Football Appeal donated money towards the cost of adding floodlights to the ground, and in return the name of the club was changed once more, to Godalming & Guildford FC. During the 2005 close season, the club reverted to the name Godalming Town.

In 2005–06 Godalming won the Combined Counties League title and were promoted to the Isthmian League Division One South, the highest level at which the club had ever played.

2012/13 saw Neil Baker and Jon Underwood guide Godalming to their highest ever finish in the pyramid, finishing in 3rd place. The Gs lost in the playoff semi-final for the second year running, this time losing 2-1 to Biggleswade at Wey Court. The season finished on a high however, as Godalming lifted the Surrey Senior Cup for the second time in four years, beating Sutton United 1-0 at Gander Green Lane, thanks to a last minute goal from Scott Harris. The close season saw Godalming moved to a third different division in as many years, this time to the South & West Division. With divisional change came a managerial change; Neil Baker and Jon Underwood left Godalming to join Slough Town, taking the majority of the squad with them. Andy Hunt was appointed manager in June 2013, assisted by Neil Selby.

Godalming have in their ranks Tom Willment who played for the Moles in pre season. FC defenders will need to watch JACK MAZZONE who has scored thirteen goals this season. A product of the Woking academy, Jack was Godalming’s top goalscorer in his first season, also scoring 13 goals.

In the first encounter in September at Wey Court goals from Brian Haule, Sonny French & Ben Stevens were enough to take all three points Godalming 1 FC 3

Manager Steve Bateman has a full squad to choose from. Long term injury Tom Cutts could soon make a return to the Squad. Tom has been training for a few weeks and now has the all clear to return.
